Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology Organize Workshop to Boost Sustainability of Industrial Sector in the Jebel Ali Free Zone

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) and Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), organized a workshop on the details of the Federal Energy Management Regulation in Industrial Facilities, the first of its kind to drive industry decisions towards investing in best available technology and operational excellence in energy management to reduce consumption and emissions from the industrial sector.

Hosted by JAFZA in the DP World pavilion in Expo City Dubai, the workshop also introduced participants to the Industrial Registry, a national platform collating data of the UAE’s industrial sector to inform decision-making and empower data-based incentive programs. The workshop highlighted the enablers and incentives offered by MoIAT to encourage compliance with energy-saving and sustainable operational efficiency practices.

National Objectives

The workshop presented a valuable opportunity for exploring the outcome of the Federal Energy Management Regulation in Industrial Facilities in supporting the objectives of the National Energy and Water Demand Management Program that aims to reduce energy demand in the industrial sector by 33% and improve air quality by 32%, thus reducing carbon emissions by 63 million tons by 2050.

Promoting the engagement of the industrial sector in the UAE’s sustainability agenda is a priority for MoEI. The Ministry reiterates its commitment to driving sustainability initiatives and promoting dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the Regulation.

At the workshop, MoEI highlighted the importance of the Regulation as a key step in developing a sustainable, energy-efficient industrial sector that can contribute to the UAE’s efforts to tackle energy challenges and the climate crisis.

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) confirmed that the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology (300 billion project) includes many initiatives and programs that support investment attractiveness, growth and competitiveness in the industrial sector, starting with the Make in the Emirates program (MIITE), which is an integrated program to attract investments and manufacture priority products locally, participate in the growth of the industrial sector in the UAE, and attract the largest number of local and international industrial investors by promoting the great competitive advantages that State-owned, highlighting opportunities for the development and localization of industrial products. The program also aims to redirect the value of purchases to the national economy by giving priority in procurement contracts to entities joining the National Added Value Program (ICV).

Since its inception, the Ministry has sought to provide possible programs for the industrial sector in line with the UAE directions that support the sustainability of the industrial sector, launching the roadmap for decarbonization in the industrial sector, with the aim of reducing emissions in the sector by 93% by 2050. Enhancing energy efficiency is one of the main axes supporting the reduction of emissions, improving operational performance and sustainable practices for industrial facilities, and the Industrial Technology Transformation Index (ITTI) was launched, through which a mechanism is provided that enables customers to improve and develop the work system in the facility in accordance with the standards of sustainability and technological transformation.

MoIAT are working in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and partners in local governments and the private sector to launch and adopt initiatives that support industrial sustainability, whether through the development of legislation and regulations or through joint work procedures. The industrial registry platform was adopted to inventory the requirements of energy demand management data to support inter-ministerial work according to zero bureaucracy program; that support requesting the information from the customer once, noting that the registration of industrial establishments in the industrial register is mandatory for all industrial establishments operating in UAE in accordance with the Industry Law 25/2022 and its executive regulations.

The Federal Energy Management Regulation in Industrial Facilities is in line with the innovation pillar of the forum by motivating companies to search for solutions and technologies to enhance energy efficiency, which will be reflected in the development of technologies that will provide more investment opportunities, and this trend supports reducing energy bills on industrial facilities to enhance their competitiveness.
