Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Emirates Transport Join Forces to Support Green Mobility

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), represented by UAEV – a joint venture between MoEI and Etihad Water and Electricity to provide fast and accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the UAE – and Emirates Transport agreed to cooperate in installing and operating EV charging stations at Emirates Transport buildings.

The move is in line with UAEV’s mission of supporting the shift to green mobility and contributing to the country’s goal of increasing the share of EVs to 50% of total vehicles on the UAE’s roads by 2050.

His Excellency Eng Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI and Chairman of UAEV, applauded the collaboration with Emirates Transport and stressed that UAEV is committed to promoting green transportation by expanding the national infrastructure for charging electric vehicles across the Emirates.

He said: “Through this collaboration, we will explore ways to make the public transport sector more sustainable. This involves reviewing the use of hydrogen vehicles in the future and examining sustainable modes of transportation. This will contribute to decarbonizing the transport sector, in line with the UAE’s net zero by 2050 goal. In addition, MoEI and Emirates Transport will work together in making policies for EV adoption in the UAE for the private sector.”

He added: “Our EV market is growing steadily. As of 2023, the total share of EVs is estimated at 3% of all vehicles. According to a report by the International Energy Agency, the UAE ranked second in the Middle East for the sales of EVs. In 2023, 13% of total car sales were electric vehicles.” He noted that UAEV plans to install 100 EV chargers in 2024 and 1,000 EV chargers in total by 2030 across the UAE.

Alex Rentier, CEO of Emirates Transport, said: “We are honoured to partner with UAEV and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure on this significant initiative to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across our facilities.  This collaboration underscores our commitment to supporting the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future and the transition to green mobility. By integrating EV charging stations into our transport network, we are taking a crucial step towards reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options. This agreement also forms the cornerstone of our collaboration on alternative sustainable-commute technologies including the integration of hydrogen-fuel technologies across applicable use cases and industries. Emirates Transport is dedicated to implementing innovative solutions that contribute to the nation's sustainability goals and the well-being of our communities”.
